How do I keep my hanging baskets looking good throughout the summer?

Watering hanging baskets, Fertilizing and Trimming are key components to keeping your plants healthy . How often you water is based on the plant type for example: Geraniums and Begonias do not like to be overwatered, therefore, only water when dry. On the other hand, Petunias and Million bells will need more consistent watering.

Fertilizing on a weekly to biweekly schedule can help provide plants with nutrients needed for bloom and healthy foliage. Check your fertilizer container for recommendated rates based on size of container.

Trimming your plants every few weeks can help to encourage new growth and bloom. Trim 1/3 of the plant back to just above the leaf.

Do annuals come back every year?

No annuals are seasonal plants only. Perennials come back year after year.

  • Place the new topsoil mixture in the bottom of the planting hole then add recommended amount transplant fertilizer such as Bone meal.
  • The transplant container should have instructions on how much transplant fertilizer to add based on the size of the plant.
  • Next take the plant out of the pot or leave in fibre pot if roots are not established.
  • Place plant in planting hole and be sure the plant is neither too deep or too shallow. The plants soil line should be level with the ground.
  • Now back fill with the fresh topsoil ensuring there are no air pockets.
  • Water the roots slowly to prevent water run off. Watering in the first season is very important.
